STAMFORD — A Democratic seat on the Board of Finance will open up next month.
David Mannis, who has been a member of the board for about two and a half years, is resigning as of mid-August, Chair Richard Freedman announced Thursday. Mannis is moving to Europe.
In early 2020, the Board of Representatives appointed Mannis to the Board of Finance to replace fellow Democrat David Kooris, who had resigned to take over as president of the Stamford Downtown Special Services District. Last year, Mannis ran unopposed to finish out the rest of Kooris’ term, which is set to end in 2023.
He previously served one three-year term on the Board of Education and was president of the board for part of his term.
“There are not many people who can move to a new place at an advanced age, which is what I did, and find a chapter of political activity and be frankly — to my amazement — welcomed by Stamford,” Mannis, 75, said during a Board of Finance meeting Thursday. “I’m off on another new chapter. I’m not sure whether moving from New York to Connecticut is a bigger jump than from Connecticut to Italy, but we’ll find out.”
“I hope I gave even a fraction of what I got back from this experience,” he added.
“It has been an absolute pleasure to serve with you, David,” Freedman said. “You have provided lots of wise counsel over the years, and you will be sorely missed.”
Any candidates for Mannis’ seat will need to go through the Board of Representatives’ Appointments Committee and then face a vote by the full board.
The Board of Finance is made up of six members. There are currently four Democrats on the board, including Mannis, and two Republicans.
